Where Shall I Start?
A difficult question but an easy answer. You have taken the first steps by beginning to read this! Maybe you are returning to painting and drawing and have not picked up a paintbrush or pencil since leaving school. Your memory may be a warm one, of a pursuit that was rewarding and engaging. Or maybe being told that you have no talent at all. It really doesn’t matter now. We are not defined by our ability of a tender school age. In fact quite a number of popular artists didn’t take up painting and drawing until a later stage of life.
As an inexperienced artist, you will probably be among those who find it difficult to begin a painting or drawing. However, there are plenty of instances where the serious amateur or professional artist will ‘draw a blank’. Or have considerable difficulty in getting going. Getting going is often the hardest part of all. Making those first marks on a blank white surface can be a daunting prospect. If you feel daunted you will not be alone. There are all sorts of ways to begin a drawing or painting, but the desire to do so is the most important.
Where Shall I Start – Getting Started?
Try to avoid setting yourself up for disappointment. Choose a subject and a medium that you feel comfortable with, one that you can handle. Don’t try to run before you can walk – but by the same token don’t be too timid or scared to try an unfamiliar medium. Be bold and confident, and remember that it is your choice. You have decided to paint and what to paint, its not a competition, and you aren’t under any pressure or obligation to anyone other than yourself.
Choose a subject that is enjoyable and interesting. Be open-minded in your approach and let the painting or drawing lead you. Accept the mistakes, you will have many. These are all part of the learning process and many a good picture has been made from ‘happy accidents’. Remember art is not photography, if you want to get an exact copy of a scene, go out and use a camera.
Let you style and personality come through. Painting and drawing is an opportunity for you to be yourself. Do not be afraid of paint or colour and remember to enjoy the process, however the outcome. Keep playing!
